Bansko - A resort full of heritage and brilliant skiing
The Resort:
Bansko is seen as one of Bulgaria’s finest resorts, and its location within the Pirin National Park (a UNESCO Heritage Site) certainly suggests this. The park is situated in the Blagoevgrad Province of Bulgaria and skiing takes place along the Northeast side of the Todorka Mountain. The huge investment that the resort has seen in recent years has added quality grooming, lifts, and facilities to the wonderful location with beautiful views.
Skiing in Bansko:
Bansko has a brilliant range and variety of runs to offer. There are long gentle blue runs, large practice areas, red runs that vary in length and gradient, and 5km of cross-country skiing. The resort is now part of the World Cup Ski Circuit meaning some of the runs that you will ski are pro-level, including one tricky black slope that more advanced skiers can tackle. One particular attraction of Bansko is the long 16km blue run that goes from the Todorka peak all the way down to the base and is perfect for beginners gaining confidence and intermediates who prefer a longer run. The resort also boasts 80% snowmaking with 44 snow canons as well as fast and efficient lifts including an 8-seater gondola.
For Schools Because:
The nursery slopes of Bansko are the perfect place for beginners to advance their skills before they move on to tackling the range of blue and red slopes across the resort. There is the added bonus of the lack of through traffic in the beginner zone making it a great environment to learn. There are also 2 ski schools to choose from, one being British run, as well as multiple ski hire points. Additionally, the resort has a middle station which is a helpful meeting point, making Bansko an ideal place for larger group trips.
Après Ski:
Bansko is a historic town and on Sundays, the local market offers a great selection of local produce and crafts. Throughout the week an afternoon can be spent wandering around shopping, eating the hearty local food, and enjoying the views. There are many traditional restaurants that serve cheap and warm food that is perfect for a post-ski meal. In the evenings there are discos and live music to enjoy before heading back to your accommodation for some well-needed rest.
